The Andy Warhol Museum stands at 117 Sandusky Street on Pittsburgh's North Shore. It occupies a former industrial warehouse that Pittsburgh designated a landmark in 2000, known as Volkwein's, Frick & Lindsay Building. The article does not name an architect or give construction dates. The Carnegie Institute was the financial backer, with the Dia Art Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The museum opened on May 13, 1994.
The warehouse covers 88,000 square feet (8,200 square meters) across seven floors, and 17 galleries fill it. Renovation and the warehouse cost about 12 million dollars by 1993. About 25,000 people attended the opening weekend.
The collection holds about 900 paintings, nearly 2,000 works on paper, more than 1,000 unique prints, 77 sculptures, 4,000 photographs and more than 4,350 films and videotaped works. A proposed 2022 expansion, the Pop District, would add about 58,000 square feet.
