Amersfoort Centraal stands on Stationsplein in Amersfoort, in the province of Utrecht. The first station opened on 20 August 1863 and closed in 1904. The present station opened on 1 August 1901 and consolidated three nearby stations. It was electrified in 1946. The station was rebuilt in 1997, adding a third island platform and an exit on the north side.

In 1970 it became the key intercity junction of the Netherlands, where all cross-country intercity trains met. The Hanzelijn opened in December 2012, so trains from The Hague and Amsterdam no longer pass through Amersfoort on the way to Zwolle. A fly-under opened on 18 October 2013 after two years of construction, at a cost of 44.5 million euros.

The station has six tracks and handled 43,710 passengers a day in 2018. The station was named Amersfoort until 2019.
