The Al-Abbas Shrine in Karbala, Iraq, is a Shi'a shrine built around the burial place of Abbas, who was buried in 61 AH (680 CE). The infobox lists the style as Islamic, and the article names no architect or client. It has one teardrop-shaped dome with inner and outer shells and two minarets, and the tomb is covered in gold and silver, with a silver trellis and Iranian carpets.
The Safavid ruler Abbas Shah decorated the dome in 1622, and the Ottoman sultans Suleiman, Murad III and Murad IV reconstructed it. A Wahhabi attack in 1801 damaged it and looted decorations, and Fath Ali Shah rebuilt the dome in 1817. The minarets were re-gilded in 2007. Renovations and courtyard roofing began in 2012, and a new zarih was inaugurated in April 2016, the first fully built in Iraq.
It draws millions of pilgrims a year, especially during Muharram.
