The African Renaissance Monument stands on the Collines des Mamelles in Ouakam, Dakar, overlooking the Atlantic. The Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby Atepa designed it from an idea by President Abdoulaye Wade. The article names no client and no style. It says Ousmane Sow started the sculpture and withdrew after a disagreement with Wade, and that the North Korean firm Mansudae Overseas Projects built it.
Site preparation began in 2006 and construction in 2008. The statue was unveiled on April 3, 2010 and dedicated the next day. It is bronze and 50 meters (164 feet) tall, standing on a 100-meter hill. It shows a man lifting a child and holding a woman as they rise toward the sky, and visitors can climb stairs inside.
It cost US$27 million, paid partly in land. Wade claims 35 percent of the copyright. The article gives no hours or ticket details.
