41 Cooper Square in the East Village is the Cooper Union academic building, designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis with Gruzen Samton-IBI Group. Construction began in 2006 and the building opened in September 2009 at a cost of $166 million. Cooper Union owns it. It stands on the site of the Hewitt Building, and the article names no style.

The nine-story, 175,000-square-foot (16,300 m²) building has a reinforced-concrete frame. Its skin is aluminum and glass curtain wall with a perforated stainless-steel outer layer. A central atrium is described as a "vertical piazza." The building has operable facade panels, radiant heating and cooling ceilings, and a green roof on the eighth floor. It earned a LEED Platinum rating.

It holds a 200-seat auditorium, a ground-floor exhibition gallery and the Albert Nerken School of Engineering. The expansion drew community opposition and a lawsuit, and was scaled back.
