320 Newbury Street is the main building of the Boston Architectural College in Boston's Back Bay. Ashley, Myer & Associates won a national design competition, with the winning entry chosen in January 1964. The Brutalist building opened on May 8, 1966, and cost about $1 million.
It has six stories and 42,500 square feet (3,950 square meters), including the basement. Cantilevered masonry masses seem to hang from the structure, and vertical slits mark the exterior beside cylindrical stair towers. Inside are open studio floors, and the sixth floor holds an oak-paneled library and a central courtyard.
Richard Haas painted a trompe-l'oeil mural on the west party wall in 1975. Architectural Forum put the building on its December 1966 cover and called it aggressively prominent. The first floor holds offices and the public McCormick Gallery. The college bought the 1899 carriage house at 322 Newbury Street in 1987.
