200 Vesey Street, formerly Three World Financial Center, is one of four towers in Brookfield Place in Battery Park City. Haines Lundberg Waehler and Cesar Pelli & Associates designed it in the postmodern style. Construction began in 1983 and finished in 1985, and the building opened in 1986 at a stated cost of $800 million. It rises 51 floors and 739 feet (225 m). American Express owns the lower half and Brookfield owns the upper half.
A courtyard connects it to the Winter Garden, a glass-and-steel public space with a 120-foot (37 m) vaulted ceiling and sixteen palm trees. The article gives floor area as 2,491,000 square feet in the infobox and over 2.1 million rentable in the text.
When the World Trade Center towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, the building's southeast corner took heavy structural damage. It was closed until May 2002. The Eleven Tears Memorial honors 11 American Express employees who died.
