1000 Trees is a mixed-use development in Shanghai designed by Heatherwick Studio, with Thomas Heatherwick as design director. The studio was appointed in 2011, and the project was completed in 2021. The client was Tian An China Investments Company.
The development covers 300,000 square meters (3.2 million square feet) on a six-hectare site. Residential towers border it on three sides, and the main art district, a public park and a river lie on the other. A grid of 1,000 structural columns of varying heights forms an undulating topography of balconies.
Each column carries a planter with a tree on top, and the columns are left exposed rather than hidden behind the facade. Two clustered structures are cut through on the south side to show their interiors. The program includes parking, offices, shops, a school, hotel rooms and art galleries.
