Jakob Friedrich Wanner designed the station building, which opened in 1871. The article calls it a sandstone neo-Renaissance structure with richly decorated lobbies, atriums, restaurants and halls. A triumphal arch faces the end of Bahnhofstrasse, with a monument to Alfred Escher in front.

The 1871 train shed first covered six tracks. In 1902 four tracks and a north wing were added, and a 1933 concourse and iron-and-glass shed covered 16 tracks. The former train hall is now the Haupthalle, a pedestrian space. Marcel Meili and Markus Peter designed pitched roofs for the shed in 1997.

Jean-Pierre Dürig won a 2002 competition for the Löwenstrasse level, whose platforms and tunnels opened on June 14, 2014. The infobox lists 13 platforms, but the platforms named in the text count 14. It gives 26 tracks. The article gives no costs or building dimensions.
