Jakub Sobieski built the rectangular fort in Zolochiv from 1634 to 1636, using enslaved Crimean Tatars as labor. The infobox says the 15th century, which contradicts the text. The walls follow a then-current Dutch style, with four pentagonal corner towers and a grand palace. Later in the century, King John III Sobieski gave the Chinese Palace to his wife, Queen Marie. It is a mauve-colored rotunda with one-story wings.
The Turks captured the castle in 1672 after a six-day siege, and it survived a second Ottoman siege in 1675. It passed to the Radziwiłł family in 1737 and to the Austrian crown in 1834. In 1872 it became a prison.
The Lviv Art Gallery has supervised it since 1985, and restoration continues. It is an Immovable Monument of National Significance of Ukraine.
