A basilica stood here in the 4th and 5th centuries. It was largely remade in the 11th and 12th centuries and reconsecrated by Pope Alexander III in 1177. A siege in 1202 damaged it, and it was repaired through the 13th century and reconsecrated in 1285. The article says the new building and facade were completed in 1324. The style is Romanesque, with Gothic features including the rose window, choir stalls and ciborium.
The bell tower's lower floors date to 1452. The English architect Thomas Graham Jackson completed the upper floors between 1890 and 1894. The article calls it the largest church in Dalmatia.
The bombing of December 16, 1943 destroyed the baptistery, which was restored in 1989. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Zadar and on UNESCO's Tentative List.
