Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and Hugh Stubbins and Associates designed the tower for Mitsubishi Estate, and Shimizu Corporation built it. Construction started on March 20, 1990, and it opened on July 16, 1993, at a cost of 270 billion yen. The article names no style.

The architectural height is 972 feet (296.3 m), with 73 floors and 292,791 square meters of floor area. Two tuned mass dampers sit on the hidden 71st floor. It was the tallest building in Japan from 1993 to 2014, when Abeno Harukas passed it. At opening its 79 elevators included the world's fastest, at 12.5 meters per second.

Floors 49 to 70 hold a hotel, and shops, restaurants and offices fill the lower 48. The Sky Garden observatory on the 69th floor was to close after December 31, 2025 for a major renovation, and the article says it should reopen in or after 2028. The hotel closed in April 2025 for renovations.
