Alexander Tamanian designed the building. Groundbreaking was on November 28, 1930, for the tenth anniversary of Soviet Armenia, and it opened on January 20, 1933 with Spendiaryan's opera Almast. The article says the theatre hall was completed in 1939 under the supervision of his son, and the whole building in 1953.

The infobox lists rebuilds in 1953 and 2002, but the text does not describe the 2002 work. Two halls are named: the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall with 1,300 seats, and the opera and ballet theatre with about 1,070 seats. The article states no style or materials.

The first ballet performance, Swan Lake, was in 1935, and the theatre received National Academic status in 1956. The Armenian opera Anoush has been staged since 1935. The company has performed over 200 works.
