Theo Hotz Architects and Planners of Zurich received the initial design contract, and the article says the final structure differs from their plans. Austrian Federal Railways owns the station. Full construction began in April 2010, trains first ran through in August 2012, the formal inauguration was on October 10, 2014, and full operation began in December 2015.

The station has five island platforms with canopies about 690 feet (210 m) long. A diamond-shaped roof was installed by UNGER Steel. The infobox says 12 platforms and the text says 10, and the article gives no architectural style. A shopping center of about 215,000 square feet (20,000 m²) lies below track level. The Bahnorama viewing tower is 217 feet (66 m) high and uses about 150 tonnes of spruce.

The article gives total cost as about 987 million euros, against a 2006 estimate of 850 million.
