The station opened in 1975, officially opened by Edward Gierek and timed to coincide with Leonid Brezhnev's visit. It was a flagship project of the Polish People's Republic, built to replace Warszawa Główna. The article names no architect and gives no dimensions.

It calls the design modernist and innovative for its time. Four underground island platforms serve eight tracks, and the original features included automatic doors, escalators and elevators for each platform. All benches are white marble. Rushed construction and changes to the scope of work caused problems, and repairs continued through the 1980s.

A cosmetic upgrade came in 2010 and 2011, and a mezzanine was built in 2015 and 2016. The city government has considered demolishing the station, while some Warsaw press and the architect Werner Huber oppose that, with Huber calling it a masterpiece of modernism in Poland.
