Jan Polak of Mostostal Zabrze designed the mast, and Andrzej Szepczyński was the civil engineer. Earthworks began on July 5, 1969, tower construction on October 18, 1972, and it was completed on May 18, 1974. The transmitter entered regular service on July 22, 1974. The height is 2,121 feet (646.38 m) in the infobox and 646.30 m in the lead.

It was a guyed steel lattice mast, triangular in section, built from 86 sections of 24.6 feet (7.5 m) each. Three guy arrays were attached at five levels, and the mast itself served as the radiator, insulated from the ground.

It collapsed on August 8, 1991, during a replacement of frayed guy wires. Two people were sentenced for the failure. A rebuild was planned in 1992 but cancelled in 1995 after local protests.
