Albrecht von Wallenstein began the palace in 1623, and it was built by 1630. Andrea Spezza is likely the main architect, and Niccolo Sebregondi succeeded him in 1628. The engineer Giovanni de Galliano Pieroni is credited with the garden, the Sala Terrena and the Riding School. Building required demolishing 26 houses, six gardens and two brickworks.

The main wing runs about 197 feet (60 m) along Valdštejnské náměstí. The two-story Main Hall covers 288 m², about 3,100 square feet, and is 34 feet (10.5 m) high. The complex has four courtyards, gardens, stables and the Riding School. The Sala Terrena has rich stucco decoration and bronze statues, and the loggia has three arcades on doubled columns.

Swedish looting in 1648 and French looting in 1742 cost it most of its furnishings. Major restoration began in 1999. The Senate of the Czech Republic occupies the main buildings, and the Riding School is a branch of the National Gallery.
