The Pamphili family built the casino, also called the Casino del Bel Respiro, after Cardinal Giambattista Pamphili became Pope Innocent X in 1644. Construction began in 1645 and was complete by 1647. The traditional attribution is to Borromini, but the article says early designs by Virgilio Spada were rejected. The project went to the sculptor Alessandro Algardi, assisted by Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi, who also painted the frescoes. The architect is uncertain. Prince Giovanni Andrea IV Doria inherited the property in 1763, which gave it the Doria Pamphili name.

The article calls the design architecturally conservative, more Mannerist than Baroque. Only the central block was built. The park covers 1.8 square kilometers.

The Italian State bought the casino in 1957, and the City of Rome bought the park between 1965 and 1971. The park is public.
