The article gives completion as about AD 30, inferred by the historian Pirro Marconi, with other proposals ranging from the 1st to the 3rd century. The outer ellipse measures 500 by 404 feet (152.43 by 123.23 m), and the arena floor 248 by 146 feet (75.68 by 44.43 m). The original capacity was likely around 30,000.
The outer facade and pillars use red ammonitic limestone from Valpolicella, in pink and white variants, while the interior walls are rubble masonry with brick and pebble facing. There are four seating tiers divided by three annular corridors. The only surviving segment of the outer ring is the Ala, or wing, of four arches.
The arena has hosted the Arena di Verona Festival opera seasons since 1913 and serves as a concert venue the rest of the year. Current capacity is 22,000 for summer performances. Riccardo Morandi reinforced the structure after World War II, in 1953 to 1956.
