NASA contracted Urbahn Architects in 1963, and the first piles were driven on August 2, 1963. The building was completed in 1966 and renamed from the Vertical Assembly Building in 1965. The infobox gives the style as industrial.

It is 526 feet (160 m) high, 716 feet (218 m) long and 518 feet (158 m) wide. It stands on 4,225 pilings driven 164 feet (50 m) to bedrock and used 98,590 short tons of steel. It has four high bays and eight low bays, and the article says six bays were originally designed.

The high bay doors are 456 feet (139 m) tall. A flag painted in 1976 for the Bicentennial is 209 feet by 110 feet. Public tours began about 2012 and were discontinued in February 2014 for renovations. The article does not say whether they resumed.
