The Dutch government commissioned the main building of the Van Gogh Museum from Gerrit Rietveld in 1963. Rietveld died a year later, and the building was completed and opened on June 2, 1973. It has a rectangular floor plan and four stories, and it houses the permanent collection.

The Kurokawa Wing, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, has an oval floor plan and three stories. It is used for major temporary exhibitions and is reached through a tunnel from the Rietveld building. The wing was added during the renovation of 1998 and 1999, led by Martien van Goor.

The museum holds 200 paintings, 400 drawings and 700 letters by Van Gogh, and it had 2.3 million visitors in 2017. It stands on Paulus Potterstraat in Amsterdam, close to the Museumplein tram stop.
