Gyula Papp and Ferenc Szabolcs designed the Uzhhorod Synagogue, which was completed and dedicated on July 27, 1904, within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The article calls the style flamboyant Romantic, mixing Byzantine Revival and Moorish Revival elements. A Star of David sits on the central balcony of the facade, and one glass dome with mosaics rises above.
Its use as a synagogue ended around 1944, after the destruction of the Carpathian Jews. In 1947 the Soviet government transferred the building to the USSR Ministry of Culture, and it became a concert hall. All Jewish symbols were removed. A plaque commemorates the 85,000 Jews from Zakarpattia Oblast murdered in the Holocaust.
The hall is prized for its acoustics and has housed the Regional Philharmonic Society. Plans in 2015 to restore the dome and mosaics had not been carried out by 2019.
