The Durward family built the castle soon after 1229, and it is first documented in 1296. The article names no architect or style. The Grant Tower was rebuilt in the 16th century.
The walled area is about 492 by 151 feet (150 by 46 m). The Grant Tower is 39 by 36 feet (12 by 11 m) with walls up to 10 feet (3 m) thick. A dry moat is 98 feet (30 m) wide.
After the siege of 1690, the garrison blew up the gatehouse, and the article also says the castle was partially destroyed in 1692. The Grant Tower partly collapsed in a storm in 1715. Historic Environment Scotland owns the ruin, which is open all year and drew 466,420 visitors in 2025.
