Santiago Calatrava designed the tower for HSB, which built and owns it. Construction started on February 14, 2001, and the tower was completed on August 27, 2005. It opened on November 1, 2005. The roof is 623 feet (190 m) high, and the building has 54 floors and 296,008 square feet (27,500 m²) of floor area.

Nine segments of five-story pentagons are each rotated relative to the one below, so the top segment is twisted 90 degrees clockwise from the ground floor. The floors wrap around a vertical core supported by an exterior steel framework. The two bottom segments are offices, and segments three to nine hold 147 rental apartments.

The design grew from Calatrava's white marble sculpture Twisting Torso, based on a twisting human figure. HSB's Johnny Örbäck saw it in a brochure in 1999 and commissioned a building based on twisting cubes. The public observation deck is on floor 49.
