Built from 1276 to 1300, the cathedral was consecrated on June 17, 1300 by Bishop Magnus I, replacing a wooden parish church. The article calls it the only medieval basilica in Finland and names no architect for the medieval church.

A new choir was added in the 14th century, and by the end of the Middle Ages there were 42 side chapels. The vaults were raised to 79 feet (24 m) in the late 15th century. The Great Fire of 1827 damaged the tower and nave interior, and most of the present interior dates from the restoration of the 1830s.

The cathedral is 292 feet (89 m) long and 125 feet (38 m) wide. The infobox gives a height of 281 feet (85.53 m), while the text says the spire reaches 331 feet (101 m) above sea level. The article says it is closed to the public from February 9, 2026 to December 2, 2028 for renovation.
