Der Scutt of Swanke Hayden Connell designed Trump Tower at 721 to 725 Fifth Avenue. Construction began in 1979, the tower topped out in July 1982, and the atrium opened on February 14, 1983. It is 664 feet (202 m) high with 58 stories, though the top story is numbered 68. The massing has 28 sides with setbacks, to give more window exposure, under a curtain wall of gold-tinted reflective glass.

A reinforced concrete core and tube structure, pioneered by Fazlur Rahman Khan, carries the tower. The five-story atrium covers 15,000 square feet (1,400 m²) and uses 240 tons of pink Breccia Pernice marble, with a 60-foot (18 m) waterfall. Under a public-space agreement it must stay open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The site held the Bonwit Teller flagship of 1929. Art Deco limestone reliefs from it were destroyed on June 5, 1980, on Trump's order, and The New York Times called this aesthetic vandalism.
