Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed the tower for the developer Donald Trump, with William F. Baker as structural engineer and Bovis Lend Lease as main contractor. Construction started on March 17, 2005. The concrete reached the top on August 16, 2008, and the spire was completed on January 3, 2009. The cost was 847 million dollars.
The tower reaches 1,388 feet (423.1 m) to the spire tip in the infobox, with the roof at 1,171 feet (356.9 m). The infobox gives 98 floors, while the lead calls it a 100-story structure. Three setbacks align with neighboring buildings, and rounded edges and setbacks counter vortex formation.
It stands on 241 caissons cantilevered into limestone bedrock. The building holds 339 hotel rooms and 486 residential condominiums. Its official height fell from 1,400 feet to 1,388 feet in 2009, when the CTBUH changed how it measures. The article gives no observation deck information.
