An earlier Early Christian cathedral was destroyed in the sack of 1123. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1213, and it was largely completed in 1251. Master Radovan finished and signed the main west portal in 1240. The article calls the style Romanesque and Gothic, with Mannerist and Apulian touches. It gives no materials. It is a three-aisled basilica with three semicircular apses.
Only the south bell tower was built, though two were planned. Its lower floors are Gothic, with Venetian masters probably working on the second. Trifun Bokanić built the final floor between 1575 and 1609, and Alessandro Vittoria made the statues on top. The tower is 154 feet (47 m) tall. Andrija Aleši built the baptistery around 1467.
It is part of the Historic City of Trogir, a UNESCO site since 1997.
