Charles VIII bought part of the Gardens of Lucullus in 1494, and Louis XII began the church in 1502 to celebrate his invasion of the Kingdom of Naples. The infobox lists Louis XII as founder, while the text credits Charles VIII with the land and papal permission. Pope Sixtus V consecrated the church in 1585, and it became a titular church in 1587.

The article calls the style Late Renaissance. Building began in a French style with pointed late Gothic arches, but construction lagged and the present church replaced that work. It says the architect of the facade is not known for certain: Wolfgang Lotz suggests Giacomo della Porta, and the infobox lists Carlo Maderno. Domenico Fontana designed the double staircase.

Daniele da Volterra's Deposition is in the second chapel on the left, and his Assumption in the third chapel on the right. The church sits above the Spanish Steps. The article gives no dimensions or visiting hours.
