Michel Stenzel, Pierre Dufau and Jean-Pierre Dacbert designed the tower as the Tour UAP for the insurer Union des assurances de Paris, and Bouygues built it. It was completed in 1974 at 522 feet (159 m). The plan was a three-pointed star with branches 120 degrees apart, said to symbolize the merger of three French insurers. It was later named Tour AXA.
Kohn Pedersen Fox and SRA Architects renovated it from 2007 to 2011. The renovation completely changed the exterior and added height, bringing the roof to 738 feet (225 m) and the tip to 758 feet (231 m). It has 52 floors, 933,310 square feet (86,707 m²) and 28 lifts. The article does not state the facade materials or structural system.
The article calls it both the second-tallest and the tallest building in France, and says only the Eiffel Tower is taller. It also gives AXA's renaming as 1996 and the Tour AXA years as 1998 to 2007.
