The Romanesque cathedral was begun around 1078, probably under Bishop Isarn. The nave was rebuilt around 1210 to 1220 in Southern French Gothic, and the choir was begun around 1272 for Bishop Bertrand de L'Isle-Jourdain, probably designed by Jean Deschamps. The choir was planned at 131 feet (40 m) high but built to about 92 feet (28 m), and its vaulting was completed in 1611 after a fire in 1609. The article says the cathedral is built of brick for lack of suitable stone.

The bell tower is 184 feet (56 m) high. The nave was converted to a Temple of Reason in 1793. Cavaillé-Coll built the choir organ in 1868. The Baroque high altar was installed from 1667 to 1670.

It is the seat of the Archbishop of Toulouse and a monument historique since 1862.
