Tokyo Tower was designed by Tachū Naitō and built by Takenaka Corporation. Construction began in June 1957, and the tower opened to the public on December 23, 1958. It stands 1,092 feet (333 m) tall, and it was built for broadcasting. Naitō took inspiration from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the structure is a steel lattice tower.

Its steel includes scrap metal taken from US tanks damaged in the Korean War. The tower is painted white and international orange to meet aviation safety regulations, and repainting, which takes about a year, now occurs every seven years.

Two decks are open to visitors: the two-story Main Deck at 492 feet (150 m) and the Top Deck at 819 feet (249.6 m). Visitors ride elevators, or climb roughly 660 steps on weekends and holidays. On March 11, 2011, the Tōhoku earthquake damaged the tip of the antenna.
