Jerónimo de la Gándara designed the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, and it opened on October 10, 1856. The article says the design was modeled on La Scala in Milan. Its auditorium holds 1,242 seats.

A fire on November 9, 1909, badly damaged the theater. It was rebuilt between 1910 and 1913 and reopened in 1914, so the audience that returned had to wait about five years.

The theater is named for zarzuela, the Spanish form of musical theater, and it is still a stage for it. In 1994 it received Spanish Cultural Heritage protection, which recognizes it as an important part of the country's architectural and performing arts history.
