The monastery stands on a basalt plateau above the Vorotan River gorge. The Church of Saints Paul and Peter was built from 895 to 906 on the initiative of Bishop Hovhannes, funded by Prince Ashot, Princess Shushan and other princes. The article names no architect. It is a rectangular basilica with an eastern apse and a central dome on two pillars. St. Gregory the Illuminator's Church was first built from 836 to 848 and rebuilt in 1295, and the Church of the Holy Mother of God was built in 1087.

The Gavazan, a basalt column topped by a tuff khachkar, is said to be about 26 or 30 feet (8 or 9 m) tall; the article gives both figures.

The Wings of Tatev cable car opened in October 2010. It is 5,750 meters (about 3.6 miles) long. Tatev has been on UNESCO's tentative list since 1995.
