BAPS Swamis and Virendra Trivedi, of the Sompura family, designed the temple, which BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha built. The Delhi Development Authority offered 60 acres (24 hectares) in April 2000. Construction began on November 8, 2000, the first sculpted stone was laid on July 2, 2001, and it was consecrated on November 6, 2005. About 7,000 carvers and 3,000 volunteers worked on it.
The article says the architecture is inspired by the Māru-Gurjara style and follows Vastu and shilpa shastra. The temple is Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble. It says the mandir has no steel or concrete, though the foundation used concrete and wire mesh.
The mandir is 141 feet (43 m) high, 315 feet (96 m) wide and 358 feet (109 m) long, with 234 carved pillars and nine domes. The Gajendra Pith has 148 life-sized elephants. The article gives no visitor rules.
