The infobox gives 1526 as the opening, but the first written mention is from 1627, and monks likely settled there in the 15th century. Catherine II closed the monastery in 1787 and gave its lands to Prince Grigory Potemkin. Restoration began in 1844, financed by Alexandr Mikhailovich Potemkin and his wife Tatiana.

The complex stands on the steep right bank of the Siverskyi Donets River. Alexey Gornostaev designed the Dormition Cathedral, which has a Byzantine-style tower. The article gives no dimensions or materials. The monastery was closed in 1922, some churches were demolished in the 1930s, and it was restored in 1992 and became a lavra in 2004.

In 2022 shelling damaged and destroyed buildings, with deaths and injuries reported among the monks and others there. A large fire on June 4 engulfed the main shrine, and Ukrainian officials blamed Russian forces. The article gives no visitor information.
