The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Theotokos stands in Suzdal, Russia, in an oxbow of the Kamenka River, surrounded by a ring of earthen walls. Vladimir II Monomakh founded the original cathedral, which the article dates to 1102. It describes the cathedral as the first city cathedral not built solely for the knyaz or his relatives.
In 1222 Yuri II of Vladimir had the dilapidated building demolished and replaced with one of white tufa stone decorated with limestone. The Mongols sacked Suzdal in 1238 and destroyed the cathedral's interior. The building burned and collapsed in 1445.
Between 1528 and 1530, under Vasili III Ivanovich, the surviving walls were lowered to arcade level and rebuilt in brick in the Muscovite style. UNESCO inscribed it in 1992 within the White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal.
