Sümeg Castle stands on Castle Hill, about 20 miles north of Lake Balaton in Hungary. It was built in the mid or late thirteenth century, and Béla IV of Hungary, who lived there during the Mongol invasion of 1241 and 1242, is credited as its builder. It has an irregular shape, two towers and a walled pathway leading to an inner gatehouse. The castle measures 410 feet (125 meters) long and 262 feet (80 meters) wide.
It was fortified in the fifteenth century, when the second tower was built. After the Turks captured Veszprém, it was rebuilt as a frontier fortress in 1552. Troops set it on fire in 1713 after the Austrian occupation during Rákóczi's War for Independence.
Parts were restored in the twentieth century. Privately owned since 1989, it now hosts events and tournaments and is the main tourist attraction in Sümeg.
