Sultan Qaboos bin Said directed in 1992 that Oman should have a Grand Mosque, and a design competition followed in 1993. The infobox credits Quad Design with Mohamed Makiya for the exterior and Edgard Bali for the interior. Construction began in December 1994, took six years and seven months, and the Sultan inaugurated it on May 4, 2001. The style is contemporary Islamic.

About 270,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone were imported. A central dome rises 164 feet (50 m) above the floor. The main minaret is 295 feet (90 m) high, with four flanking minarets of 149 feet (45.5 m). The mosque holds up to 20,000 worshippers.

The carpet has 1.7 million knots, and the chandelier is 46 feet (14 m) high and weighs 7.7 tonnes. The article gives the site as 31,600 square meters in the infobox and 416,000 in the text, and states no visiting hours.
