Sultan an-Nasir Hasan of the Bahri Mamluk period founded the complex, built from 1356. The infobox gives completion in 1363, although work reportedly continued after his assassination in 1361. The article names the supervisor, the amir Muhammad ibn Biylik al-Muhsini, but no architect.

It is about 492 feet (150 m) long, 223 feet (68 m) wide and 118 feet (36 m) high. The portal is 125 feet (38 m) high and set at an angle so it is visible from the Citadel. The southern minaret reaches about 276 feet (84 m), the tallest Mamluk minaret. A central courtyard has four iwans, reportedly one for each Sunni school. The mausoleum sits behind the qibla wall, which is unusual.

Four minarets were planned, but one fell in 1361 during construction, killing about 300 people. Another collapsed in 1659 and was rebuilt smaller in 1671 and 1672. It is part of UNESCO's Historic Cairo.
