The Eastern Counties Railway opened Stratford on June 20, 1839. Thomas Bennett designed the station building of 1948 for British Railways. Troughton McAslan designed the train crew building added during the Jubilee Line Extension works of the 1990s, and the Jubilee line opened to passengers on May 14, 1999.

Works ahead of the 2012 Olympics cost about 200 million pounds, with the Olympic Delivery Authority funding 125 million and Westfield contributing. They added three surface platforms, 14 new lifts and a steel-and-glass building by Wilkinson Eyre. Will Alsop designed the high-level DLR platforms, which opened in 2007.

The infobox gives 19 platforms, 17 of them in use, while the text lists a different set. Network Rail owns the station and Transport for London manages it. The article gives no architectural style and does not mention listing.
