Stamford Bridge opened on April 28, 1877, as a home for the London Athletic Club. The infobox lists Archibald Leitch as architect, dated 1887, and the page says he was hired to build the stadium when Chelsea took it over. The current three-tier cantilevered East Stand opened for the 1974–75 season.
After the Taylor Report, Hammersmith and Fulham council approved a 34,000-seat plan on July 19, 1990. KSS Design Group designed the complete redevelopment, which removed the running track. The Matthew Harding Stand was completed for 1996–97, the Shed End opened for 1997–98, and the West Stand was fully completed in 2001. All stands are roofed and all-seater.
Capacity is 40,044, and the record attendance is 82,905, set on October 12, 1935. In 2017 the council and mayor approved a Herzog & de Meuron rebuild for about 60,000 seats, but the club put it on hold on May 31, 2018.
