The Viennese office of Fellner & Helmer designed the present Stadttheater in Klagenfurt. Building began in 1908 and finished in 1910. The house opened for the sixtieth jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I and was first named the Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Jubiläumstheater. The article says it is very similar to their theaters in Gießen and Gablonz.
The site has a long theater history. A Ballhaus for the aristocracy was installed there between 1605 and 1620, and Italian troupes performed in it on their way from Venice to Vienna. In 1811 the wooden structure was rebuilt in stone as the Altes Theater, and the current house later replaced it.
Günther Domenig renovated the theater from 1996 to 1998. It is the municipal theater of Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia.
