The site had a church by at least the 12th century, and Romanesque foundations were found under the choir and crossing. The choir was changed to Gothic in 1355. The current late-Gothic hall church nave was built from 1482 to 1496 and consecrated on April 10, 1496. The article names no architect.

The church is 249 feet (76 m) long, with a nave 164 feet (50 m) long and 82 feet (25 m) wide. The tower is 223 feet (68 m) high. The current tower was first built in 1537 and rebuilt in 1702, and an Allied raid on December 4, 1943 damaged it.

A Gothic Revival renovation from 1884 to 1889 removed most of the Baroque fittings Bach knew. Bach was cantor from 1723 to 1750, and the article says his remains have been in the church since 1950, a claim tagged as needing a citation. The Thomanerchor was founded in 1212. The article gives no visiting information.
