The basilica stands on the site of the original Virgin Mary's Chapel and was built from 1240 to 1260, as a rebuild and fortification of the monastery. The article names no builder. Dukes Litold Znojemský and Oldřich Brněnský founded the Benedictine monastery, and its church was consecrated in 1109.

The article calls the style Romanesque-Gothic and says it is preserved in its original style, though the 1240 to 1260 work removed the monastery's Romanesque architecture. It gives no dimensions or materials. Count Jan Karel of Valdštejn later made a castle chapel from the presbytery.

A chapel of St. Procopius was consecrated in 1104, though the church was first dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and Procopius became patron in 1704. It became a national cultural monument in 2002 and a UNESCO site in 2003.
