St. Michael's Cathedral Basilica in Veszprém stands where archaeological findings indicate a church by the year 1001. After a fire in 1380, the cathedral was rebuilt in the Gothic style and dedicated to St. Michael in 1400. Parts of the present crypt date from this period.
It was partially destroyed during the Turkish occupation. In the eighteenth century it was restored in Romanesque and Gothic styles, and the surviving Baroque elements were removed in the restoration of 1907 to 1910. Concerts of works by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven were held there between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Pope John Paul II elevated it to a minor basilica in 1981. The cathedral received the relics of Queen Gisela of Hungary in 1993, the year it became the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Veszprém.
