The article gives completion as before 1298 in the infobox and before 1380 in the text. It names no architect or client. The style is Brick Gothic, which prevails in northern Germany and the Baltic states.

The church once stood 495 feet (151 m) tall and held the title of tallest structure in the world from 1548 to 1647, except for a short interval in 1569 to 1573. The bell tower collapsed in 1382 and was rebuilt by 1478. A storm blew down the steeple in 1495, and it was rebuilt taller. Lightning burned it in 1647, and it was replaced by a baroque dome finished in 1708. The current tower is 341 feet (104 m).

Friedrich Stellwagen built the main organ between 1653 and 1659. The church is part of Stralsund's historic center, inscribed by UNESCO in 2002.
