The foundation stone for a brick church was laid on March 25, 1343, and the Danzig architect Heinrich Ungeradin began the present church in 1379. Hans Brandt supervised the nave from 1485 and Heinrich Haetzl the vaulting after 1496. Both the infobox and text give 1502 as the end. Tylman van Gameren designed the Baroque Royal Chapel, finished in 1681.
The article calls it a late example of Brick Gothic, a triple-aisled hall church with a triple-aisled transept. It is 346 feet (105.5 m) long and 216 feet (66 m) wide overall. The nave, transept and presbytery have net vaults. The infobox gives a capacity of 25,000 to 30,000, and the text says over 25,000. The astronomical clock dates from 1464 to 1470.
In March 1945 the roof burned and fourteen large vaults collapsed. The roof was rebuilt in 1947 in reinforced concrete, and the church was reconsecrated on November 17, 1955.
