Construction of the Gothic cathedral began in 1311 and it was consecrated in 1452, though work continued into the 16th century. The article names no architect for the Gothic building. It was the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1563 to 1830.

The cruciform interior has three aisles divided by two rows of eight columns. It measures 228 by 75 feet (69.37 by 22.85 m), with a maximum interior height of 53 feet (16.02 m). The tower is 279 feet (85 m) high and was once part of the city fortifications. A replica of the Crown of St Stephen on top is 5.4 feet (1.64 m) high and weighs 330 pounds (150 kg).

Georg Raphael Donner is credited with the Baroque chapel of St John the Merciful and the equestrian statue of St Martin. The church was re-Gothicized between 1869 and 1877. The article says vibrations from traffic on a bridge access ramp are damaging it.
