The Lutheran congregation commissioned St. Luke's Church, and the Bavarian royal family provided the riverbank land. Albert Schmidt was the architect. Ground was broken on June 29, 1893, and the church was consecrated on the first Advent of 1896.

The article calls the style Historicism. The exterior uses Romanesque forms, and the interior evokes early Rhenish Gothic. It is built of brick on a Greek-cross plan, with a three-sided apse to the east and a seven-sided western facade with square towers. The dome is almost 210 feet (64 m) tall.

The original stained glass was destroyed in the air raid of September 6 and 7, 1943. It is the largest Protestant church in Munich and an active Lutheran parish church.
